    The rune Eihwaz, "yew", is the rune holding the powers of the most mysterious of the magical trees known to the Germanic people. The magical wand or talisman, when it was made of wood, was most often made from a yew tree. It is also said that the tree upon which Odin hung himself to discover the runes was, in fact, a yew tree. This rune is associated with Yggdrasil, and can thus send messages along it. The yew tree is also known as the "Tree of Death" and is planted in cemeteries to this day. According to popular belief, the yew tree can "trap" the souls of the dead.
